can raw diet lead to these problems?

raw food detox

I adopted a 2 year old golden retriever+cocker spaniel mix from a shelter around 20 days back. the shelter owner informed me that he fed the dog raw meat. for 1 week initially, i fed my dog canned food+kibbles with a little rice n mashed vegies etc. In the meanwhile i read about the raw diet, convinced my family and put my dog on that again. i currently am feeding him raw chicken backs/drumsticks/neck/breasts and lamb necks..each on diff days.. he is scratching himself a lot, has very little poop which is also v loose and looks tired and sleeps all day. i have noticed these changes after changing the diet. i was giving him yogurt with the food till a day back, but then i read that too much yogurt can cause loose stools. so i have stopped it now. i also add apple cider (1tsp) to his food. i feed him once a day. please help me. is this detox (cause of raw diet change) or something else. vijay sir, u had earlier told me in the other thread that the itching may be due to the tick prob he initially had. i am getting my house sprayed this weekend. i have noticed that he has scratched himself a lot in one ear. the inside if the ear has blood blots (dried up). he doesnt hav ear mites as i had got it examined. pelase help. my vet is advisign me against the raw diet, but afetr readin a lot abt it, i m convinced that i want to continue with it. also coz he is used to eating it. the meat is from the best store in town, so there is no fear of contamination coz its human grade.
thank you so much…i really dont want to go off raw food as this is what he is used to, also as per my research its the best/natural food for them and he hardly ate when i tried feeding him kibbles.

RAW diet is a very good diet for a dog..as long as you follow all directions and if it has only been a short time of the transfer from kibble it might just be that, and yes too much yogurt will cause loose stools, try and give some cooked rice and meat(chicken or hamburgerr) which should help the stools stiffen..
the ear problem might be yeast in the ears..it is a very common trait in cocker spaniel…use a cotton ball and some alcohol and wipe the ear out as often as needed…as even with the skin, i would look at some good shampoo for him, go to ebay and they sell very good shampoo for them skin problems..yeast is very very common and so is dry skin..
Also ad some veggiess and fruits to his feedings, and some brewerss yeast pills might also help his skin..you can also get some hearing fish oils which is really good for dry skin..

Definitely sounds like detox. What you need is to get ahold of a good probiotic powder supplement for dogs and sprinkle it over his food at every meal. Probiotics are basically the "good" digestive bacteria found in yogurt, but without the dairy products that can cause loose stools. I think it will help ease your dog’s transition. My dogs both eat raw, and it did take a little while for their bodies to adjust, but now they are happy and extremely healthy. Don’t let your family talk you out of this, raw is definitely the way to go!

You can probably find probiotics at any pet store, here’s some examples of what to look for:

i have had dogs all my live and i have never fed them raw food! it seems like a lot of hassle and from all the symptoms you are telling us it sounds like he isn’t a happy dog.
the fact that you got him from a shelter means he should of have a health check this normally includes, worming, updating vaccination’s and general look over him!
I would if i was you wean him off the raw food slowly and introduce a balanced dog food. now-a-days tinned or dried dog food is so good and easy, it has everything that the dog will need. Hope this helps!
    good luck

Detox does take a couple of weeks for some dogs. It could also be an allergy. For now I would stick to one protein source-chicken or lamb to see if one or the other may be causing an allergic reaction -ie:itching.
Stick with one protein for a couple of weeks and then switch to the other if the itching doesn’t get better. It does take days for a food allergen to completely leave the body so give it time before switching. Switching too often can also cause digestive upset. I would have the vet take a look at the ear just in case it is a full blown infection that needs antibiotics. Dogs on raw have less poo . You need to make sure your diet is a balanced one by adding offal every so often. Good luck.
FYI-not all dogs do well with the raw diet but most do adjust.
