Most people who have dogs in their lives, reach for the easy option of commercial dog food. There is little thought that goes into it.
Or perhaps they feel their veterinarian knows best and they buy what they offer.
Either way, the health of your dog will suffer.
But you know that already, or you wouldnât be here.
As youâre considering feeding a raw food diet for dogs, youâve come a long way and first up, need congratulating!
I find that the most difficult part of changing anything in my life, is the initial reluctance to change my mind. Itâs no mean feat. But now that youâve done that, the rest is easy.
Or comparatively!
A raw food diet for dogs is what they evolved. on. You canât beat or better nature. Nature has had a long time perfecting herself. Puny man and his pseudo ideas are no match!
But Iâm sure you still have questions. For a start, what should you feed your dog, and how much?
Are there any foods to avoid or limit?
Should bones be a part of the raw food diet for dogs?
And lastly, how can you fit it into your busy schedule of juggling work, family and hopefully a bit of time for you?
Well, lets answer the last question first. Buying raw food is no less difficult or time consuming than buying commercial dog food. Putting meat instead of a packet into your trolly takes the same energy!
The other questions on what and what not to feed dogs have already been discovered by others who have gone before you. So you donât need to reinvent the wheel. Itâs already been done. Just follow in someone elseâs footsteps.
It does take a little bit of time to get used to what to feed and how much, but once you have the hang of it, it becomes second nature.
Feeding a raw food diet for dogs is really the start of other things too. Such as listening to your dog. He will tell you what he likes to eat and what he doesnât. Heâll also tell you what medicines heâs happy to take and what he doesnât like and would prefer you not to insist.
Itâs a whole new world, and one I canât recommend enough!

systems in animals are accustomed to raw foods and use them effectively to maintain good health and well-being. In this way, wild animals live longer and healthier. However, in our homes, we tend to give our dogs and cats from cooked or processed foods bought in supermarkets. They may affect their natural vitality and immune systems and make our pets prone to infections, allergies and other diseases. Raw foods for dogs and cats are generally advantageous tender in terms of nutritional support they provide the body, promoting immune system and make it strong enough to fight disease.
Studies have shown that commercially processed foods lack many essential nutrients, which can make a dog extremely hypersensitive and susceptible to allergies. In addition, consumption of too much grain that processed foods contain can be harmful to the dog’s teeth. In a special study of 900 cats over 10 years, it was found that the rate of degeneration was higher in cats that have not been fed raw foods that cats fed raw food. Cats fed on two thirds of raw meat and raw milk diets with third little oil cod liver were found to be better than cats that had processed foods of the same calorific value. The study also showed that cats fed cooked food are most at risk of heart problems, thyroid complications, vision problems, infections, kidney, liver, testicles and bladder, even paralysis and meningitis. Irritation and sexual dissatisfaction were also some signs that cats fed cooked food displayed.
Many owners are afraid to put their dogs and cats on raw food from the fear of contracting infections by the pets against parasites, salmonella and harmful bacteria that raw foods may contain. However, such thoughts are rather misplaced, as dogs and cats have short digestive tract with a strong acid medium, which “kills” these pests and prevent their proliferation in the body. Owners can also add the fulvic acid in raw food for dogs and cats, this is an excellent acid neutralizer of toxins and can significantly reduce the risk of food poisoning.
Raw food for dogs and cats may have more choice and may include raw meat such as chicken, pork feet, beef heart, raw vegetables, including vegetable sea, raw eggs, chia seeds, oil, coconut, raw garlic, land or pureed raw carrots and Greens and other nutrients. Source bones in meat are excellent dietary calcium than dogs and cats need plenty of good health and vitality.

Here is my take on dog food preparation. If it bothers you to feed this raw, you can blanch the veggies and cook the meat, but don’t include the superfoods (spirulina, kelp) or vitamins or supplements until you’ve allowed it to cool.
Because this diet contains fruits and veggies, it is best to add an enzyme supplement (like prozyme) and a probiotic (yogurt, fortiflora)
I use a combo product called Vetri Probiotic BD, because it does both, it has the needed enzymes for digestion as well as the probiotics.
If your pet has guts of steel and rarely has gas or stomach upset, you can probably skip that part… But why take the chance.
gassy dogs will benefit from this diet and the enzymes/probiotic. Cayenne had horrible gas before this diet, and now practically NONE.
This diet should be supplemented with a Canine multivitamin (I recommend vetri science canine plus) AND a calcium supplement that has a proper calcium/phosphorus ratio for dogs.
Proper bones are best, but this diet was designed for a sick pet who can not chew. Adjust accordingly. Dogs for their size need more calcium than humans.
I also add salmon oil daily to my pets rations, as well as a raw egg yolk a few times a week.
For dogs who can handle it, crush up the shell from the egg, it is really good for them. Make sure your eggs are organic and minimally processed, farm fresh is the best!
THEY LOVE IT!
I do NOT use the same ingredients every week. The best thing to do is alter at least TWO ingredients per week, such as changing your protein sources (or changing out half the source)
and one or two of the veggies and fruits. DO NOT KEEP USING the same ingredients all the time, and don’t change up the entire diet every week.
For each protein listed, remember you should use some organ meats as well. Cayenne can not tolerate too rich food right now, so we limit her snacks (livers and hearts, chicken gizzards etc) to only once a day. Otherwise she gets stomach upset. Also, we have to monitor for GI bleeds, kind of hard to do when the diet is too rich.
Find a happy medium. Change it up, but not too much you give them stomach upset.
Buy ORGANIC fruits and veggies and use FREE RANGE fresh meats as often as possible!
Here is the basic recipe I follow:
12 pounds of meat, 2 pounds of vegetables, two pounds of fruits, and about a pound or so of supplements.
This gives a proper ratio of meat. Dogs should eat about 2.5 percent of their body weight of this food per day.
For meats, you can pick one single source protein, or mix and match to come up with 12 pounds.
Beef
Chicken
Duck
Lamb
Pheasant
Quail
Turkey
Sardine (uncured, unsalted!) ground fine
Venison
Bear
Rabbit
NOTE bear and rabbit MUST be cooked prior to adding, reaching a temp of 160 to eliminate parasites. These should be supplemental “treat” meats, not to be used exclusively. The bulk of the diet should be meats that are fine to feed raw.
Supplements (you should always pick TWO OILS, one plant based and one animal based)
To figure out how much you need to use, you need to figure out HOW MANY SERVINGS your food makes, and adjust to get a DAILY DOSE.
Salmon oil
coconut oil
salmon oil
safflower oil
apple cider vinegar (there is no measurement to this, I usually use 1/2 cup or so)
vitamin E (as mixed tocopherols, a NATURAL preservative!)
ground flax seed meal
Garlic (only in small amounts because it can cause anemia)
Grapefruit seed extract
spirulina
kelp
Herbs (pick TWO, and use 2-4 ounces each)
Cilantro
Sage
Fresh puree of celery
mustard greens
rosemary
Parsley
Ginger
Veggies (pick two, and pick different colors)
Grind them fine, like gut contents of prey animals.
Kale
Alfalfa (fresh, NOT DRIED, dried can bloat up in the stomach!)
Collard greens
Broccoli
Zucchini
Cabbage
Green beans
turnips
carrots
yams (these must be cooked and mashed)
Yellow summer squash
Fruits (pick two, and pick different colors)
Apples
fresh cranberries
blueberries
papaya
pineapple
I can’t state enough,
BUY EVERYTHING ORGANIC if you can, some products will not be found organic, do the best you can. Free range meats or wild game are the best source for meats. USE FRESH MEATS ONLY, not crap out of the bargain bin!
If you would not eat it, DO NOT FEED IT TO YOUR DOGS.
Check with your vet before changing your dogs diet.
BE AWARE all diet changes must be made gradually. Any sudden change in diet can make your dog very ill.
