Dr. Gabriel Cousens, Raw Food Expert and Author Shares the Benefits of Detoxification

NEWS The Fountain of Youth World Summit with Dr. Gabriel Cousens, the founder of the Tree of Life Rejuvenation Center and author of “Conscious Eating” and “spiritual Nutrition. ”

KEVIN NEWS: I am extremely excited about it. So why not start talking about detoxification? What’s your story? How were you involved there?

GABRIEL NEWS: Well, first I explore a spiritual perspective. In 1982, the mine was one of 40 days of fasting.

KEVIN NEWS: A-ha.

GABRIEL NEWS: is the file. . . probably the best way to start – it was a great way for me to start but I really do not recommend for most people.

KEVIN NEWS: [Laughs]

GABRIEL NEWS: In 1988 I really started doing retreats for fasting people.

KEVIN NEWS: A-ha.
GABRIEL NEWS: and a lot of different searches. We have, in fact right now we are in the midst of a spiritual yoga juice fast.

KEVIN NEWS: OK.

GABRIEL NEWS: So it’s really fun to share together. In the tree we do, we actually changed 2 different fasts. It is where people come every once a week, and what we had just called a detox fast.

KEVIN NEWS: OK.

GABRIEL NEWS: Then we had a spiritual fast, which is like a week at a seminar. It’s really a 9-day fast. So, that’s kind of what we do. This is one of the main things we focus. We have developed a lot of research in technology along the way with it. I think the most important thing to understand is that fasting is the most natural and most potent means of detoxification. Paracelsus, the great physician of the Renaissance in the 16th century and so on, discussed the most powerful healer is fasting.

KEVIN NEWS: A-ha.

GABRIEL NEWS: and Hippocrates, one of the great Greek physician, also said that fasting is the medical procedure. So why not work fast? Because it activates a vital force, and is the life force that stimulates the body that gives him enough energy for detoxification.

KEVIN NEWS: OK.

GABRIEL NEWS: So, the model we can take is that the cells are filled with toxins, but they are also overloaded.

KEVIN NEWS: OK.

GABRIEL NEWS: And they are not as able to get the toxins. So when we fast, we stimulate a process of activating cells, and also, I’ll use it to call it a diffusion process. What we mean, as you’re pulling toxins through the law of fasting by doing what we do, eliminating in many areas, we do brushing of the skin which we’ll talk. . . we enemas and colonics.

KEVIN NEWS: A-ha.

GABRIEL NEWS: We do not clean the kidneys and liver. We breathe to clear the toxins out of the lung. We help people to gas, so that they – here in Arizona, you can be outside naked in certain areas, so you are getting a full body cleansing in the air. So all these things begin to reduce the toxins naturally. And in this way, it starts with. . . cells. But the key is truly vital force, which is strongly activated by the power of fasting.

KEVIN NEWS: OK. And you spoke about detoxification, I mean, what are some things that we need to detoxify from?

GABRIEL NEWS: Life!

KEVIN: [laughs]

GABRIEL NEWS: Really We have physical toxins, emotional, mental, spiritual and toxins.

KEVIN NEWS: OK.

GABRIEL NEWS: And when people come here to Patagonia, Arizona, they received a very, very clean air and the clean water. People are then able to rest and relax because in most people in the modern world have lost touch with their pace.

KEVIN NEWS: OK.

NEWS GABRIEL: touch What life is about, they have lost the sense of what life is like, and substance of their mission, their sacred mission in life. And if the fast is a time to restore and put us in contact with your sacred rhythm, your sacred design, and also get in touch with the rhythm of the planet. We live in the cities, the pace of the planet, you know?

KEVIN NEWS: Yeah.

GABRIEL NEWS: You can not see the sunset because the skyscraper is in the path, and it is as if kind of thing. So fast, in a deeper sense, helps you reconnect with your essential self. Now, that said, we will focus a bit more about the physical part of it and various fasts have different effects.

KEVIN NEWS: OK.

GABRIEL NEWS: At 7 days is fast that we do. Now we – just to be clear, there are people who come here and they fasted for 80 days.

KEVIN NEWS: Wow.

GABRIEL NEWS: 90 days, and had enormous benefits. We’ll talk later. I think a week is fast may be more appropriate for people and a good place to start. First, fasting is not something new. It is 5000 years old. Almost every culture has.

KEVIN NEWS: A-ha.

GABRIEL NEWS: and in the animal world, dogs can fast until 60 days. Salmon swim upstream for months without food. Penguins go 3 months without food. It’s part of it – the cycle of nature.

KEVIN NEWS: OK.

GABRIEL NEWS: But why a week, and why is it worked. What we found is that it takes about a week according to my research to get rid of toxins from the colon. Now, where do toxins from the gut? Well, they come to this – most people have pathogenic bacteria in the intestine.

KEVIN NEWS: OK.

GABRIEL NEWS: And because we eat too much, and we are not digesting well. To. . . pathogenic bacteria begin to eat the food rotting, and it turns into toxins.

KEVIN NEWS: OK.

GABRIEL NEWS: This is what we are talking about in particular.

KEVIN NEWS: And those are reabsorbed?

GABRIEL NEWS: And they get reabsorbed into the body. They come in the nervous system. They go around the body. In 1917, just to make it clear, this is not some sort of an idea found in 1917 and Sedderly Eldrich, two doctors at the AMA, okay?

KEVIN NEWS: -ha.

GABRIEL NEWS: Now, this is the way that the AMA people do now. But this time they were on it. They have cited 517 cases of compensation whereby the intestinal toxicity, people return to their depression, their anxiety, their paranoia, their lethargy, their amazement, their general feeling of malaise.

KEVIN NEWS: Wow!

GABRIEL NEWS: Really impressive! Okay, so they understood that the toxicity in your gut has been affecting your – how your mind. It has been affecting your mood. It was touching your clarity. OK, it’s true! The Russians had done research with schizophrenics. And they took the supposedly incurable schizophrenic and put on a water fast. We do not recommend the water really fast. There are a danger to her, but I do not even know if they have juicers, Russia, so I’ll just say it like that.

KEVIN NEWS: [laughs]

GABRIEL NEWS: and especially when the research has been done and what they found was 28-35 days in water that is a severe water fasting. That 65 percent of schizophrenics is now cured.

KEVIN NEWS: Wow!

GABRIEL NEWS: and the only time they relapse is that they ate meat. Now, what the reason is that schizophrenics have a certain pathway or some schizophrenics at least 65 percent.

KEVIN NEWS: A-ha.

GABRIEL NEWS: or when they eat meat, the bacteria of putrefaction produce 6 times higher 5-hydro skatole. Skatole is one of the toxins from the bowel. And it was literally that – have a nervous system schizophrenic.

KEVIN NEWS: OK.

GABRIEL NEWS: So that’s how powerful it can be. Now, in 1933, Dr. Bassler 5000 cited cases where people healed sinus, sciatica, nearly all the items that you may think you know that arthritis, new emotional problems, and related fields again clearing of intestinal toxicity. This is not a metaphor in other words. These are real – toxins are real things. You got skatole. I will not enumerate all of the ammonia.

KEVIN NEWS: And how do you know if you?

GABRIEL NEWS: Well, everyone has them.

KEVIN NEWS: OK. [laughs]. So it’s like there is coverage, everyone has that. It’s just a matter of

GABRIEL NEWS: Exactly. Now, when you are fasting, when we fast because we are fasting the whole world, we have a youth center in Israel.

KEVIN NEWS: A-ha.

GABRIEL NEWS: By the Dead Sea, so strong and they have to be viewed kindly.

KEVIN NEWS: A-ha.

GABRIEL NEWS: and have been quick here, or you – you know, often outside of our weekly 10 days detoxing. And basically if you do not like the food, and you’re not overeating. . . food while you are fasting frequently, you do not have a lot of toxins in the colon. You’ll get a little bit.

KEVIN NEWS: OK.

GABRIEL NEWS: Most people tend to accumulate overtime, especially if they do not have much acidophilus. So, it’s pretty endemic. And the good news is really in a short time within 1 week, we measured the indican which is a measure of intestinal toxicity.

KEVIN NEWS: OK.

GABRIEL NEWS: In 1 week, 6 days, most people, no excuse me, one hundred percent of the population we we tested showed no indican in urine.

KEVIN NEWS: OK.

GABRIEL NEWS: So we know roughly 6 per day on a juice fast, you do with your colon toxins. And it’s also about time the mental condition of the individual begins to emerge. And they are beginning to have an enormous amount of energy. There is a large amount of energy you get when you get the toxins. On a 60th birthday 4 years ago, we – day 5 or 6, I’m not 601 push-ups.

KEVIN NEWS: OK.

GABRIEL NEWS: and this is something I could not do while I eat. I was up to 550 something like that. I do not break the barrier.

KEVIN NEWS: A-ha.

GABRIEL NEWS: The reason is, there is this – even if someone who is – you know eating the right foods, 100 bills Food per cent, and you know that the manufacture of juice, and do all that on a regular basis, there is certain amount of toxins that you build. It’s something for everyone.

KEVIN NEWS: OK.

GABRIEL NEWS: and just that the difference in 5 days jus dissipated the toxins to give extra strength. Once after a fast of 7 days, we did the Mount Chester who was in the 90s. We walked a group of us walked on the mountain of Chester. Usually it is a journey of 2 days to go to 10,000 feet, and the 2nd day you go, and camping, then you go over 2000 feet.

KEVIN NEWS: A-ha.

GABRIEL NEWS: We started at 3 ‘o clock in the morning. We reached the peak of about 11.

KEVIN NEWS: Wow.

GABRIEL NEWS: and we just walked right too because we had that extra energy.

KEVIN NEWS: Wow. That sounds good. I think that is probably almost everyone in this appeal could use a little extra energy. [laughs].

Raw Food Teacher Shares Tips on the Road to Better Health

Renegade Water Secrets with Angela Stokes, raw foodist, teacher and expert on raw food weight loss.

Kevin: You mentioned that finding a support group was important. Your family, you say, was filled with obesity and not a healthy group of people that you could probably find support from. Where did you go to find the support?

Angela: In the very beginning the main thing that kept me going was going to potlucks. There was potlucks about once a month and that really made all the difference to me. Because, as I said, I was out in the countryside in Iceland and I really felt isolated and just kind of crazy at times and I then would go to these potlucks and there would be all these people there and all this amazing, vibrant food. I would see people’s different creations and just that sense of community and it’s not just me. That really nice feeling of there’s other people who are on this path. And then of course everything’s just been growing on the Internet so much in the last years with raw food. So I started to get more and more into that and these days we have such wonderful communities online like giveittomeraw.com eat.rawfood.com and so that’s what I really encourage people to get into. If you can, meeting people face to face in your communities or if there aren’t any potlucks in your area create one. Just put some little signs up around your area saying, “Is anyone interested in eating more healthily” or you could even say “in eating raw food” or “eating vegan” or whatever it is. Or start a reading group around health books and develop it from there. You don’t have to feel isolated or alone. This message really is spreading. That’s what excites me, is to think about how it’s just going to keep on expanding. At the moment the infrastructure isn’t there so much in society for it to feel particularly easy to be a raw foodist a lot of the time. But it’s coming. It’s going to be so exciting in the coming years, I think, to see what unfolds.

Kevin: Let’s get into a question that I like from one of our listeners who’s on the line now, she basically asks what’s the best way to get started into raw foods without shocking the system?

Angela: Yeah, I recommend for people to start out eating at least 50 percent raw and preferably at least 50 percent of that to be fresh, raw stuff. So not all dehydrated and packaged raw foods but a lot of fresh stuff. And just take it from there and start building up the percentage of raw that you can handle. And maybe at some point you become 100 percent raw and maybe you don’t. Like this person says in the question, it’s really important to not shock the system. From what I’ve seen over and over again with people, so many people find out about raw food and they want to go 100 percent and they jump in the deep end and then they go into this huge detox and you never see them again. They jump completely off the wagon and that’s it. And I feel really sad when I see that kind of thing. I would much rather see people just slowly, slowly build new habits into their lives. This to me is a lifestyle. It’s not about going on some diet you’re going to go off again at some point. That’s not the mentality around it from my perspective.

So yeah, slowly build in, working with the foods that you already know you like. Everybody has some kind of raw foods they already know they like. Maybe it’s plums or maybe it’s celery, whatever. And this is actually one of the steps that I guide people to do in “RAW EMOTIONS” is to make a list of the foods that you already know that you like and have that visible in your house. Have it up, like on your fridge so when you go shopping or when you’re ordering online or whatever it is, you have this thing and you can keep adding to it as you try new things, as your taste buds adjust. And keep trying new things. Every week maybe try one or two new foods. And just slowly, slowly keep incorporating new things so that you don’t get this sense of restriction and deprivation. Which that’s so common that you’ll hear people when they go raw saying, “Oh, I can’t eat bread anymore.” Or, “I’m not allowed to eat this.” To me that’s just not really coming from a space of empowerment or a space where you’re really enjoying what you’re doing. It just seems to come from a weakened perspective. And so slowly build it up and make sure that you’re doing what you can to help the body as it detoxes. Because that’s really what this is all about. It’s really about coming into alignment with nature.

It’s like pressing the reset button in your body. It’s like pressing the release button. “Okay, I packed in heaven knows how many pounds and pounds of toxic stuff for years and now we’re going to let go of it.” And your body’s just going to go for it. Like I said earlier, the body just rushes towards optimal health and it will just be dumping stuff out of your cells like crazy. So do what you can to help with that process. Do colon cleansing, do skin brushing, keep your lymphs moving, do exercise, anything. Tongue scraping, netipot, whatever you can to help keep the detox process going. And be kind to yourself. Be gentle to yourself. It doesn’t have to be all or nothing in the beginning. Take it slowly.

Kevin: Some people might not know what skin brushing is. Can you just explain what that is?

Angela: Sure. You take a dry bristle brush, a special one that you can buy in health food shops and stuff, they’re really inexpensive, maybe ten dollars, and you go over your entire body with this dry brush, like before bathing or before you step in the shower or whatever. And that sounds kind of crazy when you’re not used to it but once you start doing it you might find that you just fall in love with dry skin brushing. It’s a wonderful way of removing dead skin cells from the surface of your skin. You know, the skin is our biggest organ and there’s such an opportunity for detoxing through our skin. But a lot of people just don’t really seize the opportunity. People where clothes all the time, tight clothes and they put deodorant on and body lotions and they really don’t give the body and the skin that much space to breathe. So when you do the dry skin brushing it’s like you’re removing all these dead layers of skin, you’re giving the muscles a nice workout, you’re moving the lymph as well and it’s just all around a very beneficial habit to do daily with your body. And it’s so cheap. Ten dollars investment in a brush and you’ve got it for like twenty years or something. So I highly recommend dry skin brushing.

Kevin: So what would you suggest for someone right now, listening to this call, enjoyed everything that you have said, what would you suggest is their first step to just either getting the weight loss or getting the raw food results that they’re really looking for?

Angela: I would definitely say if you still have processed or cooked food items in your house that you don’t feel great about, and it’s within your boundaries to get them out of your house, then go for it. Just get those things out of your personal space and start to get that list together of the things that you really enjoy. Start connecting to other people, build your momentum around this lifestyle so that it just becomes more embedded in your day to day things that you do. So that it just becomes habitual.

We’ve had so many years of living and eating this other way, and we’ve got all those patterns behind us to move out of now, just try and do what you can to every day just check in with what’s happening with you with raw foods in some way, whether it’s that you open a raw food book or go onto a raw food website for inspiration. Reach out to others, you’re not alone.

And I always say, I really feel like if I can do this than anyone can. Six years ago I was 300 pounds and had no interest in health whatsoever. And I’m still here. I wouldn’t be here still, six years later, if there wasn’t a good reason for it. So my health, my happiness, everything in my life was completely transformed from doing this. And there’s no reason why other people can’t experience that same kind of shifts if they just choose to do so and stay on that track.

Kevin: That’s great advice.
